Versatility, Passion & ¡Sabor!

Alma features an exquisite and passionate selection of Latin and Jazz favorites.

About Alma

Born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, Alma began performing at an early age in various theatre and musical productions.  She received her Bachelors in Theatre performance from San Diego State University and in 1995, moved to Seattle, Washington to pursue an acting career. She performed in various dramatic and music productions for The Group Theatre, Aha Theatre, as well as touring with the Growth & Prevention Theatre for several years.

In 2001, Alma transitioned from acting to music when she was asked to join a 10-piece salsa band and became a regular fixture in the local Seattle Latin music scene.  In 2003, Alma decided to venture on her own, stepping up as a bandleader which allowed her the opportunity to explore a broader palette of expression, while opening her up to a bigger and more diverse audience.

One of the most striking things about Alma is her ability to honor the rich traditions of the various Latin genres that she performs, without being singularly defined by them. She masterfully integrates beloved Latin rhythmic styles like Bolero, Cha Cha, Bossa Novas, and Salsa, with more contemporary influences including Jazz, R&B & Pop.

In 2013, Alma had the extraordinary honor of performing as one of the lead vocalists for the Seattle Peace Chorus production of “Canto General,” a sweeping 12-movement suite inspired by the Chilean Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda. Alma describes the music as some of the “most beautiful” that she has ever heard but also “some of the most complicated,” with challenging meter changes and complex vocal parts. After two very successful performances in Seattle at Town Hall and Cleveland High School, she was invited to travel with the choir to Chile, where they performed three concerts between Santiago and the southern town of Temuco.

Alma has released two CDs. Singing in English, Spanish and Portuguese, both recordings offer lush renditions of favorite songs from a variety of Latin countries, reflecting the unique beauty and passion of all of the cultures therein.

In 2015, Alma was asked to return to the stage as part of Ese Teatro’s Bernie’s Apartment, a modern adaptation on Federico Garcia Lorca’s the House of Bernarda Alba which was performed at ACT Theatre in downtown Seattle.  Shortly after, Alma was cast in two productions at West of Lenin and the Theatre Off Jackson.

A versatile and passionate performer, Alma continues to sing with her own Latin & Jazz standard ensemble and is a featured vocalist with Jazz Therapy, a seven-piece Jazz, Funk, and Latin music band.
